God Overcomes Our Unbelief to Bless Us

Today I read: 1 Chronicles 1-2, Psalm 81-82, Amos 2, Hebrews 8.

Gospel summary: God is good and longs to bless his people abundantly, but because of our slavery to sin and selfishness, he must punish us. In Christ, God has wisely punished all of our sins and applied that work of redemption to our hearts by the Holy Spirit, thus causing us to love and serve him, so we could enjoy his abundant goodness over our lives as we seek him.

Prayer: Father in heaven, I praise you for changing my heart and setting me free from my chamber of selfishness by the regenerating work of your Holy Spirit. You have poured out on me such lavish grace in the gospel when I deserved perpetual downfalls of your wrath for my sins. Teach me to humbly and gratefully comprehend the grace of your gospel and take this life-giving message to a lost and dying world. In your gracious name I pray Jesus, amen.

Memory verses: "But as it is, Christ has obtained a ministry that is as much more excellent than the old as the covenant he mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises." (‭Hebrews‬ ‭8‬:‭6‬ ESV)

Hymn: "Abba Father! We Approach Thee" by James G. Deck

"Abba, Father!" we approach Thee
In our Saviour's precious name:
We, Thy children, here assembling,
Now the promised blessing claim.
From our sins His blood hath washed us;
'Tis through Him our souls draw nigh;
And Thy Spirit, too, has taught us,
"Abba Father!" thus to cry.

Once as prodigals we wandered,
In our folly, far from Thee;
But Thy grace, o'er sin abounding,
Rescued us from misery.
Thou Thy prodigals hast pardoned,
Loved us with a Father's love;
Welcomed us with joy o'erflowing,
E'en to dwell with Thee above.

Clothed in garments of salvation,
At Thy table is our place;
We rejoice, and Thou rejoicest
In the riches riches of Thy grace.
"It is meet," we hear Thee saying,
"We should merry be and glad,
I have found my once lost children,
Now they live, who once were dead.

"Abba, Father!" all adore Thee,
All rejoice in heav'n above;
While in us they learn the wonders
Of Thy wisdom, wisdom, grace and love.
Soon before Thy throne assembled,
All Thy children shall proclaim,
"Glory, everlasting glory,
Be to God and to the Lamb!"

The Blessed Generation- Psalm 24

Psalm 24 "A Psalm of David. The earth is the Lord 's and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein,for he has founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers. Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false and does not swear deceitfully. He will receive blessing from the Lord and righteousness from the God of his salvation. Such is the generation of those who seek him, who seek the face of the God of Jacob. Selah Lift up your heads, O gates! And be lifted up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of glory? The Lord , strong and mighty, the Lord , mighty in battle! Lift up your heads, O gates! And lift them up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory! Selah" David begins this psalm with a joyful declaration that G...

The Word: Fully Human, Fully Divine

The Christmas holiday brings with it questions of both the incarnation and the trustworthiness of its record. Was Jesus just a man claiming to be God or God pretending to be a man? If the Bible was written by men, can we really trust it? In this two-part post, we’ll see the fully human, fully Divine nature of both God’s Word (post 1) and Jesus, God’s Word made flesh (post 2). So this week, lets examine the reliability of the Bible, which bears the record of the God-Man, Jesus. The Word of God is fully human a) Human agents, with their own personalities and backgrounds, wrote the Bible The Scripture was written over more than a millennium-long stretch of time by several dozen authors from various cultural backgrounds. Therefore to consider that God could speak one distinct message for His people through such different people in different times and different places is surely a miracle. Students of the Bible can tell you that the message of God’s Word, whether Genesis or Revel...

Delivered from All That Would Destroy Us

Scripture: Psalms 144-145, Mark 3. Gospel summary: God is our great deliverer who comes to the rescue of his children. He has personally come in Jesus of Nazareth to release us from bondage to Satan, reverse the effects of the fall, cleanse us from all sin, and call us to be his own special people who carry his gospel to the world. Prayer: Father in heaven, praise be to your glorious name. You are so worthy, for you alone have come to my rescue and delivered my soul from sin, Satan, and all suffering. Thank you that you didn't sit up in the heavens and expect me to deliver myself, but that you came to deliver me yourself in the person of Jesus. God, I am such a rebel against your will and do not have the power to live for Christ, but I give you glory for saving me, and at great cost to yourself...the shame and suffering of the Son of God at the hands of your enemies. I thank you that Jesus is the stronger Man who binds up Satan the strong man and before whom even the demons tr...
