Thoughts on reading books of the Bible in one sitting

One of the practices that I think is very helpful for every Christian is to read whole books of the Bible in one sitting. We often read a chapter here or a chapter there or even worse just a few verses from a paragraph so we do not get the whole picture of the book the way that it was meant to be presented. The Bible calls us to pay attention to the public reading of Scripture, and I think that means that we should read large portions of Scripture together as believers. Some of Paul's letters including Ephesians and Colossians were letters that were sent to whole churches and circulated abroad and were meant to be read out loud in one sitting. I was recommended this by another believer and found it to be extremely helpful in my walk with Christ. Once I sat down and read through the book of Hebrews in one sitting I instantly realized how powerful this was for understanding and being able to apply the word of God to my life.

Here are a few reasons why I think that you should consider reading through whole books of the Bible in one sitting:

  1. You will see the big picture, the bird's eye view of the whole book.
  2. You will understand prominent themes in the book that you do not see clearly when only reading portions
  3. You will better be able to follow the flow of thought of the author
  4. You will better be able to explain that book of the Bible to another believer

Yesterday I decided to read through the Gospel of Mark in one sitting and I have included my thoughts below...

It was amazing how action-packed Mark's Gospel is. It seemed like every scene Jesus was "immediately" healing someone, casting out demons, or being Lord over creation. It is also remarkable how John Mark kept the focus of Jesus being the divine Son of God throughout, yet nobody acknowledged this until after his death when the Roman guard saw his blood and water come out. Yet throughout the book God testifies that he is his Son (baptism, Transfiguration), Jesus himself teaches it, and the demons constantly recognize it. The Gospel of Mark seems to be consumed with the identity of Jesus. The crowds, the disciples, and the Pharisees are constantly wondering "Who then is this?" and there are multiple times when people would get a glimpse of Jesus's identity through his miraculous power, and he would command them not to tell it to others, but they couldn't keep it in, and they're telling others was the cause of his not being able to travel in certain places. Many were afraid when they realized that the man they were dealing with was the Son of God.

Meditate and pray on: Jesus' identity, the weightiness of the son of God coming to earth, the gravity of the son of God laying down his life for sinners on the cross, the breakneck pace of Jesus' life to fulfill all righteousness and usher in God's kingdom, the sheer power and strength of the son of God, the suffering and hostility poured out on the son of God by sinners.

Grateful for an Unequaled Wife

I have been listening to the marriage conference held at Southern Seminary recently online at night with Emily and have been reminded that I, as a husband, have not been faithfully cherishing my wife as I ought. I was greatly challenged by C.J. Mahaney's message that stated the importance to have regular scheduled opportunities for uplifting your spouse and giving her a chance to get away from the mother personality for a short time. I was also challenged by listening to Dr. Russell Moore's message about fighting for your marriage like Christ stood against the Enemy for our good out of his steadfast love. I as a husband have been blessed with the most unequaled wife of all. There is no other woman on the planet who can come close to Emily Ruth Wynn and I need not look any further than her. She is always utterly encouraging to me and her wonderful love in my life challenges me to be the man God has called me to be. There are several things that I love about Emily. One of the ...

The Power of The Spirit of God

Today I read: 2 Kings 2, Psalm 48, Daniel 6, and 2 Thessalonians 2. Gospel Summary: Our spiritual strength is not our own, but is a result of the Holy Spirit working in us. When we trust in God's strength, we are immovable and even our greatest foes cannot destroy us. If it were not for the Holy Spirit we would have no strength against the forces of evil that come against us. Prayer: O God, you are my strength and apart from your Holy Spirit in me I would be nothing. Keep me ever pleading like Elisha for a double portion of your Spirit. Spare me today from assuming that I have this power apart from you and keep me ever dependent on the constant filling of your Holy Spirit. Show me that with your Holy Spirit in me there is nothing I face you cannot bring me through. But please teach me that apart from your Spirit I have no chance against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Keep me constant in faith, knowing that I am weak without you, you are God without m...

Giving it up and Just Meeting God

I was about to go to bed the other night when Doug told me he wanted to just chill with me and talk about what God is up to. I had been running around like a chicken with my head cut off all day and was acting as though God would waste some of my time. I have now come to the conclusion that God deserves my time...even if it means me only getting about 4 hrs of sleep, like I did last night. I think this is gonna teach me to discipline myself about all the stuff I go to and do with other people so that I can sit and just chill with God for a while each day. I don't like the term "quiet time" because its just so lame sounding....I prefer Chill Time. I think if God were to use up to date lingo, he would call it chill time. I mean, why can't we just be still and know that He is God. I also think this will strengthen my love for Him and for others. If I really put the day into perspective BEFORE it starts, I know that things will go smoother with God on His rightful...
